ATP Testing With Safe Spray Disinfecting

Do you look at a clean surface and wonder, is it really safe? Did you eliminate all germs?

While you may not see the level of disinfection done on your surfaces with your naked eyes, ATP testing gives you this power.

Hospitals use ATP testing to determine if a room is safe to admit the next patient. After cleaning, they test the amount of ATP on the surfaces to ensure that there are no lingering pathogens like viruses and bacteria.

At Safe Spray, ATP testing is at the heart of our disinfection services. We conduct ATP testing as part of our assessment before disinfection and also after disinfection. That way, you get tangible results on the disinfection done.

    What Is ATP Testing?

ATP is the short name for Adenosine Triphosphate. All living organisms need energy, and this energy is stored in the form of a molecule called adenosine triphosphate (ATP).

Adenosine triphosphate is found in all organic matter; plants, animals, bacteria, viruses, yeast, etc.

Wherever there’s ATP, there is organic matter. This is the basis of ATP testing.

An ATP test identifies living organisms and food residue that you can’t see with your naked eye.

    How ATP Testing Works

ATP testing is quick and effective. All you need is an ATP test swab, and a small device called a luminometer.

The swab helps to collect samples from various surfaces. The samples are mixed with a reagent in the luminometer. The reagent is usually luciferase, the enzyme that produces light in fireflies.

When the sample reacts with the reagent in the luminometer, it emits light. The luminometer measures this light in RLU (Relative Light Units). An RLU reading below 60 is excellent. High RLU readings mean high amounts of microorganisms or food residue. Food residue means more food for bacteria.

The higher the concentration of ATP, the stronger the light and the higher the RLU readings.

    Why ATP Testing Important

When we test the amount of ATP before disinfection, it helps in the following ways:

    • It determines your baseline before we touch anything. You get to see how dirty your surfaces are. You also identify the dirtiest spots in your room.
    • The ATP readings help you determine your best-suited disinfection option.

When we test for ATP after disinfection, we identify any spots that need further cleaning. An ATP test also helps you in these ways.

    • You gauge how effective our disinfection service is.
    • When you compare post-service readings and initial readings, you see how much we have accomplished. That way, you can trust that you get your money’s worth.

    ATP testing ensures transparency.
